About Me

Professor John Adeyinka Adekoya had his early education at St Paul Primary School and Remo Secondary School, Sagamu from 1947 – 1961. He graduated from University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile Ife with a B. Sc. (Honours) Geology degree in 1968 and was one of the two pioneer graduates of the Department of Geology. His master’s and Ph. D degrees were obtained from McGill University, Montreal, Canada (1975) and University of Ibadan, Ibadan (1991), respectively. He was a beneficiary of several postgraduate professional training awards for Mining Geology (Caghliari, Italy, 1971); Mineral Exploration (McGill, Montreal, Canada, 1973); and Remote Sensing (Stockholm, Sweden, 1990)His professional career as a geologist, which spanned a period of over 53 years, commenced at the Geological Survey Department (now Nigerian Geological Survey Agency) in 1969.  Between 1969 and 1981, he headed three Branch Offices of the Geological Survey Department at Kano, Benin and Ibadan. From 1981-1987 he lectured at The Polytechnic, Ibadan and attained the rank of Chief Lecturer and Head of Department of Environmental Sciences. Thereafter, he served at The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) from 1987-2012 and rose to the rank of Professor of Economic Geology/Mineral Exploration and Head of Department of Applied Geology in 1996 and at Osun State University, Osogbo from 2013-2018. He has also served as Dean of the School of Earth and Mineral Sciences from 2009 to 2011 at FUTA. Prof. Adekoya was a versatile, thorough-bred professional geologist who has worked on several mineral exploration projects, namely, iron deposits, bauxite, phosphate, fire clay, marble, gold, kaolin and construction stones. Although he has carried out in-depth research and published extensively on banded iron-formations of Nigeria, he has also diversified his research interest into aspects of petroleum geology and geotechnical studies as a result of which he and his colleagues had carried out studies of the Chad Basin’s petroleum potential. As part of a public enlightenment program, he initiated a radio program titled “Minerals of Nigeria” on Voice of Nigeria. As someone deeply interested in Nigerian mineral resources, he has recently authored a book titled “Metallic and Industrial Minerals of Nigeria”.
